Sorry to hear about your friend and test results, but really glad to hear it didn't hit you hard.

Interested to hear how that thing works. The videos looked like it would be awkward. Looks like he can't really put a good swing on it because he would lose control the way it rolls. Seems he has to be choked up on the handle to keep ahold of it causing him to use more pushing force than letting...

    Any interest in stainless?

That was exactly what I was thinking. I've seen bands go on steel before and it can be interesting to say the least.

    Any interest in stainless?

That sounds like it was quite the reactive endeavor.

    New boulder

The nagura are like using different grit synthetic stones. When you use softer nagura to make a slurry on the hard stone, you are honing with the grit in the slurry. Once you get through the slurry and to clear water, you are now just using the stone itself. This one is almost like using a hard...

    New boulder

I finally got the chance to get this one home. I got to borrow it a few years ago to try out, but wasn't in a position to be able to keep it. Thankfully my honing mentor was still willing to let it leave. It is a very dense hard Asagi from the Narutaki region, and an excellent razor finisher...

Too small. Still had it's spots. I'm actually glad it wasn't a big one as I was 35 miles from home and drive a Cruze. It has already been the victim of an adult deer and it wasn't being driven after that one. That car is a freaking deer magnet...

    Building a small coal forge

They don't have to be real big. A 2'x2' box with some dirt in it, a pipe stuck through the side and into the firepot hole in the middle for air and you are set. Another option could be a square box just full of dirt for your insulated bottom, two hard firebrick stood on their side, an air pipe...

    Building a small coal forge

If it's only for occasional use, would one of those dirt box forges be sufficient for what you need? Wouldn't require a welder or much money, and you can experiment with what size firepot would work best for you and adjust as needed.

I have looked at Bader machines as well as Travis's machines. They are still out of my range though. I don't doubt that you get what you pay for on either account, but they are still out of budget at this point in time. I am going to look into the 82 inch belts though. I saw some grinders set up...
