Norton 1K is great, but will take a long time. Slurry it with something! Tape the damaged spot with electrical tape around. Seems one width will do. Half- hone the adjacent sides, swooping a bit and avoiding the tape. You will know as you can bridge the gap and do complete strokes. Idea is to...

Take it off evenly between the heel and toe. You will get an even smile as you do. A breadboarding candidate. Half-strokes toe and heel, avoiding the middle till it all evens-up.

Good idea, Charlie. Reminds of my tripod light I made from an old telescope stand and an old desk lamp. Good to put light on the subject and very adjustable. I even extend one leg way out to get it up against a fender to shine under hoods. Handy stuff!
