    Smelting wootz

Additionally this will be an interesting experiment to see how big the influence of ingredients vs smelting setup is

    Smelting wootz

The class is still cancelled but I've been communicating with the guy who was to teach it. He uses a mix of pig iron and chemically pure iron like Alfred pendray. Only he needs to buy it by the multiple metric ton. I bought 5 pounds of this mix to smelt myself with his advice. And he smelted a...

Those are the 2 main things I see missing. Another piece of information from the book that has my curiosity piqued is the part that covers re-crystallization. I've only read through that part once and I haven't put much thinking into it yet. But given that crystal boundaries do affect cementite...

Yes, for the compositions mentioned. There is one smelter I am having a perpetual disagreement with on the use of manganese which imo changes what is going on for the worse. But yes in general. Although there are imo at least 2 omissions from the book that I can see. The first is about the fact...

    Vanadis 4 Kitchen knife

Fair point. In honesty forging vanadis wasn't as bad as i was made to believe. Granted, without the press (or a powerhammer) it would have been impossible. Once it was down to 4 mm it was doable. Over the years I've done many things people told me not to try. Looking back to 2006 when i knew...

    Vanadis 4 Kitchen knife

If you google 'forging vanadis' or 'forging vanadis knife' my video is literally the only relevant search result. Yours truly seems to be the only one admitting publucly to be stupid enough. :p

    Vanadis 4 Kitchen knife

This one is forged from Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra Superclean. I started out with a piece of 57 mm by 18 mm by 25 mm. I started this without a real plan. I'll be the first to admit that the forging wasn't the most efficient. I mainly wanted to see how the steel behaved so I played with it to...

    Any interest in stainless?

My power hammer is gone, now I have just the forging press. And my hand hammer. The press was wonderful in getting it from 6/8 to 3/16. Once it was down to 3/16, forging was not too bad actually. As long as you don't mind the steel not moving a whole lot. I mainly worked at orange heat. I'd say...

    Any interest in stainless?

I forged a small kitchen knife form Vanadis 4 Superclean. It was ... interesting. I've filmed the process and I'll upload the video later.

    Any interest in stainless?

I checked with the Uddeholm rep and he said that between 1000 and 1100 degrees Celsius would be a good temperature to work the Vanadis. I need to make some larger chef knives but I think I'm going to make a couple of smaller paring knives first and see how it moves. Kinda apprehensive about that...

That's a good idea. They work against rodent type possum thingies as well.

    Making a Damascus kitchen knife

Part 3. The billet I made in the 1st part is cut in 5 pieces, restacked and drawn, cut in 2 pieces, and twisted 8 times each. Around the 13:40 mark you can see the twistinator in action again. I chose to use a 18 mm diameter this time which is 6/8" and at high temp I could twist it easily...

Stainless doesn't really make sense unless you need steel that doesn't rust.

Right now, the Rona numbers are going through the roof again. Problem is that the age group 20 - 30 has decided they're fed up with restrictions and they 'deserve' to party. Every day the police bust 'lockdown' parties. Especially students seem to have just given up. I get that that is the age...

I told Victor I'd mix his cremains in tbe lining of my forge for an awesome joke. But i guess some of them could be smelted in a crucible with raw steel to make creazzite. By its very nature creazzite would be limited supply :D

Absolutely. Yiu have to consider that the cementite carbides are more like long strands of hair in wootz. A customer once sent me a microscope pic he made with uv light or so. And you could see countless tiny dots sticking out but they were really microscopic. Chromium carbides otoh are like...
