Wootz with sapphire in bone scales

In the past, there was a guy who made some nickel silver scales with an intricate cutout design. I feel that a set of bone scales like yours with an intricate pattern would be very nice. Just my 2¢ :)

Wootz with sapphire in bone scales

I like the scales, they are unique and interesting. My preference tends toward the natural materials and I have liked the durability of bone for a long time. Well done.

Sand is not an insulator. Instead of sand try vermiculite. That is more of an insulator than sand. Also, try heating up more pieces of steel at the same time and put them into the vermiculite at the same time. Then it will take longer for the steel to cool thus getting softer. Just my 2¢ :)

It may be time to look for a dedicated shop

If i recall correctly both mike blue and howard clark would allow a select person to use their equipment for a fee. Perhaps someone in your area would be willing ?

It may be time to look for a dedicated shop

In the past, during the few times I have made Damascus billets I have only used a hand hammer for setting the initial weld and then used a hydraulic press for the remainder of the work. Power hammers are fun and useful but not the only way to skin the Damascus cat. In your case it sounds like...

    A wild caught Escher!

It is pretty difficult to overhone with an Escher/Thuri. The key with any finishing hone is to stop when you are getting a very good shave. Easier said then done of course. :)

    Electro-punch uses ?

I like this idea. Although I can use my Whitney punch to make washers the quality is not all that good. Now I need to talk with some of my machinist friends about making the dies...... My lathe will be setup soon and the mill is already setup.

    A wild caught Escher!

If you have a Escher/Thuri or barber hone and it came with another small stone then the small stone is called a "rubber". It's purpose is to clean the hone of any accumulated swarf. It is not meant to be used as a burnisher. The "rubber" will not change the size of the grit in the hone. It will...

:) Bruno, I have 2 of the NWG left. One was sold a number of years ago and the other I frankly don't remember where it went. So, that leaves me with 2 NWG, 2 Wilton Square Wheel grinders with 10" drive wheels and a Bader! Don't feel like buying anymore hones so I will keep what I have for...
