The knife looks great cangooner! Not trying to be a party pooper, but the FDA recommends being carful of acidic foods in contact with copper.

My little "shop" and a few toys from it

I realize that the 10hp motor is not running at full load, but that doesn't leave a lot left for running your household. Has that ever caused issues?

My little "shop" and a few toys from it

Thinking about your 20 amp per leg limit. That essentially forces a certain amount of load balancing within each household taking a lot of the burden off of the utility . Smart!

My little "shop" and a few toys from it

Your 3 phase 400 volt leg to leg at 20 amps would be the same amount of power as 240 V single phase at ~60 amps. I think modern building codes in the U.S. require 200 amp service for residences. 120 V outlets and devices are the norm for low power applications here, partially explaining the...

    Wish me luck....

Try heating just the center of an 8' bar, or better yet do a forge weld on a 36" diameter 'tire' for a wooden wheel, for just a couple of examples where coal is the right approach. I mostly use propane, but there are plenty of things that are easy with coal that are totally impractical with a...

    Wish me luck....

I've heard that if a piece of copper is thrown into a coal forge it makes it impossible to do a steel to steel forge weld. A billet might be different than a jump weld though. I've also heard that it is very difficult to get rid of the contaminant by just cleaning the fire.

    Belts

I just used a brand new Cubitron II YF weight belt on a 1.5" wheel with no issues with the bonding.

Time will tell, but I'm not expecting any issues.

The belts arrived and the stiffer backing on the 36 grit belts does not seem like it will cause any issues.

    Re etching pattern welded steel

The areas that I want to touch up have been re ground. So there is zero etch in those places. On the same topic I'm involved in a discussion about re etching a pattern welded kitchen knife after thinning. This would be similar as the etch would be completely gone where the knife was thinned...

    Vanadis 4 Kitchen knife

Howard Clark recently did some work with some 50100. which is like 52100 except with only .3 percent chromium. People were referring to it as silver steel.

    Re etching pattern welded steel

Anyone have experience re etching portions of a previously etched piece and getting the etch to match. Maybe this is a non issue, but I haven't done it.

The 36 grit Cubitrons were $14 USD and change each.

    Belts

I've not used a 36 grit cubitron belt yet, but bought them based on my one 40 grit belt that I'm still using. I really don't have a good way to judge belt life other than impression. Howard is also a fan of cubitrons. The 36 grit cubitrons that I ordered do have a different backing...

    Belts

I just ordered some 36 and 60 grit Cubitron 2 belts along with some more higher grit aluminum oxide Klingspor belts. I love Cubitrons.

    Safety in the workshop

I made an adjustable spark deflector for my grinder, should take the excitement out of a belt breaking too.

    Forge welding stainless to 1075

On the other hand, if you're going to plate quench the 1075 won't harden anyway, so I would expect it to behave similarly to mild.

    Forge welding stainless to 1075

I talked to a guy who did some knives with stainless cladding. He said weld all the way around the billet and avoid hitting perpendicular to the stack. Oh, and make sure that your surfaces are clean clean.
