Arthritis and getting old in general

My hands will not do the projects that I saved for when I get older.

Today I am working on a new belt and I could not squeese the hole punch.

This picture is staged close to the pivot point but you get the idea.

Actually my hands feel good today after working them hard......

My job is intermittently very physical. My strength and stamina are no longer a gift. I have to exercise regularly in order to be safe and effective. Not quite the same, but it fits the getting older theme. There was a time I could lift very heavy things over and over all day long, and it was easy.

I noticed that the little aches and auwies don't go away like they used to.
My thumb and my ring finger on the left have gotten really painful if I push them sideways a bit.
I think it started when I forged a stianless kitchen knife without the welding glove on my left hand.
Normally that dampens the impact the hand that holds the tongs. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now it feels bruised inside.

Yeah, my job (been there 29 years) require the same motions all day long so i'm feeling it in my arms. Certain motions just hurt so i've had to learn when it hurts to do it another way.

My doctor has me now on a drug for gout. My joints haven't felt this good in years. I hope the side efects aren't worse.....

I am going to see a rheumatologist but that in itself is a pain!

I have found that a good stretch every morning keeps me in pretty good form. I read an article when I was about 35, it was about people with a high quality of life in their golden years. There were a ton of differences in all of the peoples lives, but the one thing that they all had in common was some sort of fitness routine. Tia Bo, Ti Chi, martial arts, yoga, low impact sports, that and being old 2as all they had in common. That’s when I started with yoga ish exercises. True yoga is different from what I do , but I feel it makes a large impact on my body.

Show me that again!
I'm finally getting ready to be able to go back to work after the hand and shoulder rebuilds. I think two more weeks and I will try doing what I used to do, Haul and deliver fuel. It's been over 6 months now without work so my body has healed up in some places, got repaired in some places, and fatter in other places.

I sure hope I can still do my job well enough to pass muster. Only time will tell as I'm not ready for retirement. I had a good taste of what that is like and I don't think I'm ready for it yet. I will be 60 in 6 months so I'm not ready.

And in another week or two, I may try to handle a straight razor again. Crossing my fingers.
Getting old is not for wimps!

My neighbor is a retired plasterer. I've seen him hold plates of 10 to 20 pounds of semi solid plaster above his shoulders all day. Meanwhile I get sore shoulder from using a pint brush at that height :D
