One of the more important revelations I've had concerning etching is the difference between nital etching and ferric chloride etching.

With ferric chloride the point is to remove metal, and the pattern is revealed through the difference in metal removal speed / chemical interaction with the surface.

With nital etching, you don't remove metal as such, but you make visible the crystalline structure inside the steel where it meets the surface.

This is a key difference, and explains why you need to choose the etching medium based on what you are going for.

I was hoping for a doc on how to recreate near or lost etchings. but good explanation

Has anyone tried pickle juice for etching?

After my wife used it for cutting pickles for burgers and leaving the knife on the table for an hour or two it etched my good pattern welded knife........
