I took them in to get sharpened today.

I can hone a razor but these..........

For $5 apiece I will see what happens.

An Erik Antonberg, Buck, Wade and butcher, the other three are orthopedic.

Nice gouges! Love the Wade and Butcher (i must admit the orthopedic ones kind of gross me out). I used to do quite a bit of woodcarving myself and didn't find the gouges that hard to hone. Kind of a rocking back and forth motion. The V gouges on the other hand i could never get the hang of.

The gouges you can maintain on the buffer once you have them sharpened. The V gouges you will need a block for.

I am thinking I should get a bench mark to start.

Sort of like sharpening a razor, where do I start?

Well there is that, however if they are in rough shape and need serious work, it’s a poor place to start learning. If you have access to places to get it done I think it is a sensible way to start, get the maintenance figured out. Over time you are certainly going to ding one, at least once and then you can try to do the repair yourself then. I think you are on a wise path.

Never tried my hand on sharpening a gouge.
Seems pretty tricky compared to a nice flat(ish) razors edge or kitchen knife

I have watched a few videos and it seems like it might not be as hard as I was thinking.

The thing to me is practice. I didn't want to practice on these and I am not a woodworker although if I have some interesting sharp tools I may use them more.....

At the shop I brought them to they said this guy that is basically a subcontractor will get them "razor sharp!"

We will wait and see.
