New Alfred Pendray razor project

First, thank you so much Shaun for considering doing this. I was tossing it around and thought a Celtic Cross going sideways would be cool. Pickbone is always good too. I am open to any ideas, you are the artist!

Ok. If you send me a template, I will work up a design and post it here. I will email you my snail mail address. A letter likely will arrive at my house about the same time as I am getting home from work.

I really like the rustic look of the bone scales on the razor in the set that Dave posted today.
The question I have is would something of similar bone be an acceptable candidate for carving?

I have never carved stabilized or fossilized bone. I expect the stabilized bone should carve very similar to bone. There is only one way to find out though.

So I am far from being an artist. I was doodling and here is my idea of the two ways to carve a Celtic Cross on the scales that I thought of.
What do you guys think? Am I even close??

It kind of depends a bit on the stabilization colour. Your pictures show colour relief where it is carved, that will not necessarily be how the colour changes. It may wind up being a difference in texture more than a difference in colour. So in example drawing one, everything will be the same colour, the cross would be polished and the rest of the scale would be textured. It is much more subtle than in your example and I have no idea how that would be drawn on paper to show it. A small inlay as a relief within a textured scale would have it stand out.

Like I said Shaun, I was just doodling.
At least you have an idea of what I was thinking when I said Celtic Cross.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with for a design.

According to my wife, I recently received a package from Belgium. I’ll get to check it out in a week.
The razor is really looking good.
I don't think that is going to be mine, given that I don't recall sending anything.
At least I think I didn't. I only just received the bone for this project. I thought I had scrap enough but I had zip so I ordered a new rib and it arrived a couple days ago.

@petercp4e I am starting on the scales. Just to make sure we're on the same page: the rib is a bit more curved than the razor. This means that the scales will be a bit more curved than the curvature of the spine. You can see what I mean on the pics of the SC125 razor with the rib scales. Is that ok with you?

Normally my scales match the spine so when they don't like when using this material, I want to doublecheck :)

I just found the pictures of the SC125 razor.
I wouldn't have ever noticed the curvature of the scales and spine being different.
To me, it's not an issue. That razor is beautiful.
I'm sure the scales you are making will be fine.

I cast the resin yesterday. Cleared up beautifully. We discussed it, and agreed that transparent to show the natural color was best.
I'll unwrap it in the evening and show the result.

That looks awesome!!
Exactly what kind of bone is it??
Have you and Shaun decided if it can be carved or if it's better to leave well enough alone? I'm fine either way.

I plan to finish your razor in a couple of weeks, with the scales pre-poked :)
Let's see what it looks like, using microscrews, and then decide based on that.
