Fun for myself because I see many sports only 4 years.

A couple of Belgian riders did good in the time trials today.

Some of the losers wanted to blame the track but When I raced [cars] I always laughed because the track is the same for everyone good or bad......

Yes. Much to our surprise as well. Though admittedly the gold winner has been crushing it all year.

There was some controversy about the opening ceremony but imo these things are meant for extravaganza :D

I saw a Belgian horse do well in the Dressage.

I forget the name of the rider and they didn't mention the horse enough.

The USA swimming has done well. Along with another couple of sports.

Thinking of 70 meter archery and some fun pictures I took of my grandson a few years ago.

[My shooting......} LOL

I don't follow the cycling because it's just not my things but i love gymnastics and athletics. Yesterday we watched hammer toss and some running events. The 100 m was a nailbiter!

When I first started watching the archery coverage I thought that I can shoot as well as those guys/gals. Then I relaized they were shooting at 70M not 20M.

When I shot a lot I think I was in the 95 to 96th percentile. The big trouble at that or a higher level is that it takes much more to increase 1%.

I used to shoot with a "kid" that was very talented. Crazy good. He went out to the olympic training center and after much he didn't make the team. Also after watching recently the USA team is not very high ranked.

I used to shoot barebow, and our coach was a multiple national champion. He told me that if I kept training like I did and started doing tournaments, he couldn't guarantee I'd be national champion but I'd be in the top 3. The problem with that is when competition season begins, it's pretty much a weekly affair, with most events being hosted 2 to 4 hours driving away. Much as I liked shooting, I had absolutely 0 interest in doing so.
In any case I moved to a different city and while the distance is probably absolutely trivial by American standards, with the added burden of house ownership, I dropped out soon after.

Also keep in mind, Belgium is a fairly small country and the barebow division is a fairly small one at that. :) Being national champion is like being the biggest fish in a very small pond :D

Btw did you watch the pole vault? I watched it live. It was electrifying. His warm up jump was the silver medal position, and he ended as far above that as the difference between silver and 11th place.

Another cycling medal yesterday. We're on a roll. :)
Today will be exciting. We have 2 female athletics competitors going for medals in the heptathlon, and one in taekwondo.
And then our ladies will compete for medals in basketball and hockey.

It's interesting that our ladies traditionally do much better on the world stage than our men. My uneducated guess is that women's sports is underfunded pretty much everywhere, and the difference in resources between women in different countries is less outspoken than the resource allocation in men's sports in the various countries.

Today was great. Nafi Thiam took gold in the heptathlon, and Nore Vidts the bronze in the same category. Especially impressive is that Nafi took gold 3d time in a row which is exceptional. Our taekwondoka took bronze.

The basket team lost to France in a nailbiter match. They did very well for 3 quarts, but 4th quarter they were running on empty and the entire last quarter was nothing but playing foul on both sides. Maybe I'm just not experienced enough to understand the game but basically if the other team attacks and you think it is going in, you shove / push / slap the attacker to make them miss. In return they get 2 free balls but 2 possible points is less bad than 2 'for sure' points. Idk. I understand the logic but I don't like it.

I have shot against Brady Ellison and a couple of his caliber.

This is why I say I am in the 95% percentile..... :)

Re the hammer toss/throw: it was (probably) basically what Bruno suggested. :D If you watch Highland games, you might see a version of the event in which they throw basically a big rock on a long stick. I.e. a neolithic-style sledge hammer. I don't think anyone knows for sure exactly how the event developed, but it seems it did once upon a time involve people chucking a big old hammer.

You know I hadn't thought of that yet, but indeed. I've watched the annual highland games in the city they have this event where they toss a big rock on a stick.

Sort of like a shot putt on a rope?
I think I remember them saying the weight was 7.6 kilos.
They have to aim between a fairly narrow opening to avoid the risk of having that thing land in the audience. A yard of handle helicoptering around would mean making the opening much wider.

The shower knobs stripped off recently and I had to find some replacements. Installing those I had to get a set of Allen wrenches and the closest ones were in my archery bag for my olympic recurve bow.

I had to get the set out of my quiver and then saw my buckle and thought I would share.

Who needs cams? At least they make interestin belt buckles!

is that a compound cam?
A long time ago I had a compound bow. In terms of plain simple fun I prefer barebow but compounds are engineering marvels.
