I used to shoot barebow, and our coach was a multiple national champion. He told me that if I kept training like I did and started doing tournaments, he couldn't guarantee I'd be national champion but I'd be in the top 3. The problem with that is when competition season begins, it's pretty much a weekly affair, with most events being hosted 2 to 4 hours driving away. Much as I liked shooting, I had absolutely 0 interest in doing so.
In any case I moved to a different city and while the distance is probably absolutely trivial by American standards, with the added burden of house ownership, I dropped out soon after.
Also keep in mind, Belgium is a fairly small country and the barebow division is a fairly small one at that.
Being national champion is like being the biggest fish in a very small pond
Btw did you watch the pole vault? I watched it live. It was electrifying. His warm up jump was the silver medal position, and he ended as far above that as the difference between silver and 11th place.
