Some pens I made Today

Do you need to stabilize wood for these purposes or does it only need to be dry?

I am not expert, but more dense woods don’t absorb much if any fluid when you try to stabilize them. Softer wood and spalted woods and some burl spices will absorb quite a bit. The dense woods have very little air space in the wood for the fluid to go into. At least that is my understanding. I’ve been wrong before, so anyone more in the know feel free to correct me.

I have 2 boxes mixed with black walnut, mahogany, and some curly cherry. Got them all put together and started finish grinding a couple blades and saw a Crack in one.....
After I broke it, the boxes are still there because I was a bit pissed to say the least.

At least my heat treat was good. Grain structure is really tight and I took the bottom piece and smashed it into the vise 3 times. Had to file the vise, but you can't see where I hit on the blade. I think I got a bad spot in the steel because the Grain looks like a pocket right there and is huge.
It was mono steel so it wasn't a weld flaw. That's all I can figure is the bar had a bad spot.

Beem out for a bit. Getting my body used to work again. I have to admit the first three weeks back at it I wasn't so sure I was going to be able to do my job. But now it's better. I've gotten most of my strength back now. My mother also came to visit for a long weekend from Washington and that took a lot of my time. It was good to see her and it was the first time she had seen my home. One of the first things she said when stepping into the house was, "I can see you have been busy. Just like your dad". Dad and I always do our own repairs. Dad and Mom split up years ago btw.

Whenever you get that wood together for the post just let me know and I will be happy to send ya the funds for it. Just let me know Bro. Sounds like you have gotten some nice pieces together.

Rez has pretty much said it about the woods. Now dry is a big plus. But depending on what your turning a little moisture in the wood is a good thing. Just not Greenwood. That moves while drying and can cause issues at times. Like the last bowl I turned. It doesn't sit flat on its base anymore. You cant see the warp but it dried and twisted just a little. It happens. Not a bad thing.

These are all kiln dried pieces. I have been so busy running I haven't had time to get to the post. Hopefully this coming week will be a little less hectic.

I actually was going to send them out this week and then I had a car go through my garage door and through my shop.... both anvils and the forge were moved all the way to the back wall and 5 gallons of quench oil was all over the place....

I have to see how much of the pieces are still good and hopefully didn't get soaked in oil as the boxes were sitting in range of the quench tank when it went.

Sorry to hear that. Hope all of your stuff is okay. Take care of your property and send when you can. Repairs sound more important right now.

Dang. Was it a road accident, or did someone slip the clutch or something like that?

My stepdaughter was trying to put her car on ramps. As it hit the top she panicked and tried to stomp the brake but missed and hit the gas instead. Went over the ramps and through the garage.

So far it looks like just the forge and miter saw are broke besides the door. Her car took a good dent in the bumper but the way it rolled up onto the smaller anvil and stand it kind of slid on that and didn't hurt anything under her car. Was quite the pain getting it off that and back on the floor to get it outside.

She's ok but decided for me that I wasn't waiting until spring to take that garage door out and frame it in with a window and walk in door.

Walk-in Door Too? I like that idea. Mine is in sections from side to side. Light Weight and insulated with windows. I couldn't put a door in it but that would be a handy thing. Like having a door around the corner of the garage door except that takes up space inside.

Too bad about the saw and forge. Hope it works out ok for ya soon.

I have (had) 2 garage doors on the front but no walk in door. So I was always opening an overhead any time I wanted into the shop.

So my plan was next summer to take out and eliminate the one overhead door and frame it in with a walk in door and a window.

I don't really need 2 overheads since the one side is all shop, and even at current lumber prices that option is still cheaper than an overhead with a built in walk in door. Framing will be super fast once I get the materials.

As far as the forge, I think I'm going to do my own lining instead of buying the replacement boards. They were warping bad

Tragic story with no blood loss, as good as it could end. I’m with you on reframing and making the space more functional in how you use it. I hope it all winds up well. The quench oil may be annoying to get cleaned up. Glad no one got hurt and the damage does not sound excessive.

I'd always line the forge myself. The cost of buying bespoke things isn't worth it. All it needs to do is keep heat in.

I haven't forgotten you, I just need to get my butt in gear and get you some new blocks since the others ended up soaked in quench oil in the garage incident. We have just been pretty busy at work for me to have a lot of time to dig through pieces.

I forgot all about it bro. LOL.
Life is getting extremely busy here. So no big deal. When you can is fine with me. Thanks.
