Yeah, I was going back and forth on the time I was spending building it instead of just working on the razors, but now that it is done I'm really happy with the time invested. I'm sure that I will find many uses for it that I haven't even thought of.

I plan to do something similar, but with press dies.
My plan is to take enough time making several press dies, so that after drawing and forging the bars, I can make hollow blanks with a tapered tang (for razors) and kitchen knife blanks.

Brilliant design, I love the simplicity of it. I have had surface grinder attachment on my mind for a long while, everything I came up with in my head was Rube Goldburg-ish compared to your design.

It surprises me how once you have a tool how many ways that you can think of how to use it.

When you have a problem to solve and you don't have that tool, then the tool doesn't enter into your thinking of how to solve that problem.

But now that you have that tool it may be the best way..........

I surface ground two more razor blanks and tapered the tangs on them on Friday. This thing works great. The side to side accuracy is pretty poor because of variables of belt wear and the squareness of the wheel to the tool arm. But the toe to heel accuracy is very good. It accomplishes what I built it for very well and is easy to set up and use.

That makes sense belt wear and cutting degradation can be very location specific in the width direction. I assume that any offsers are well within tolerance for pots ht cleanup?

Yes, the differences in that direction are not problematic at all. I was just making the point that it is not like a machine tool.

The guy from hermes abrasives tol me that their biggest users use very wide belts and use the for production line work that always has thevsame type of load

What we do is much more damaging to belts tjan what they design for. And in turnover, our type of belt is not where the bulk of their income comes from.
