Thuringain Honing Tips?

Craving Knowledge

As I am new to straights, shaving and honing. I would like to here from people that use a Thuri. I picked one up not knowing what it was. Cost all of $15 from an antique store. I sent it to @gssixgun and he confirmed it to be a Thuri.

Anyhow I have only finished a few edges on it so far. But i must say I really like the silky feel off of it. I use the same progression on my blades. Naniwa SS 1,3,8&12K. For finishing I have the following options. 1 micron Lapping film, CrOx, IronOxide, both of these are on leather mounted on a flat piece of Aluminum. I also have a Translucent Arkansas.

The first couple I finished on the Thuri I raised a slurry first. Then slowly diluted. My last blade, my DD I went straight to water. Keeping it wet and clean. The blade hazed the first few laps. Then after 50 laps, nice and shiny.

Anyhow, how about some pointers for us.

Thanks
Tom

Well Glen does have a thuri video, although it mat be one step honing, check his videos first. Some of the thuris can be super duper slow, but according to Richard the slower ones are finer. I have no personal experience with multiple thuris. Mine often get hit after a 10K, and before I had a 10K it was after the 8K. There is not a lot of difference in those edges. I really like playing with slurry so I tend to go there, especially after the 8K. I have to say that your hone is so small that you will have to do a lot of laps. Check your edges often. If you have a solid edge, as in not long honed on a synthetic before you get to the thuri, it takes a lot of laps to get it to start to break down. You should take an 8K edge and see how many water laps you can do before the edge starts to get micro chips. My guess is you will loose count first. Do try to see what the upper limits are on your hone, for experimental purposes. Also try to see how few laps you can do for a polish. Your sweet spot is just a little bit past the minimum. In general, the longer you work an edge the shorter it's life is. Ideally we want to have them as sharp as we can without pushing that edge too far. The best way to learn is to pay attention, maybe even take notes, and experiment.

Show me that again!
Just checked the Bay on the Thuringen hones. Boy, they sure are proud of those! I might have to pick one of those up some day. Still learning the naturals I have. But if I run across one of those on the cheep...

Congratulations Tom it looks like a nice dark gray, thanks for sharing. I use Thuringians, Eschers, on a regular basis for final finishing razors. The Wonderedge (excellent steel BTW, the best of the DDs) will perform best if finished on a Thuri if done correctly. If you want to try something here is what I recommend IMHO.

  • Tape the spine on the Wonderedge please.
  • Go through your progression 1,3,8.
  • When you get to 12K do about 10-12 laps and stop. 12K is an aggressive cutter.
  • THEN re-tape and do 30, 50 or 75 passes elbow up on the thuri with slurry starting out and finish with water only. Very light, weight of the blade passes at the end. Strop on LEATHER ONLY to prep for shave test.
Here’s the fun part, keep in mind the narrow stone is easy to make a mis-stroke and ruin your edge. Then you drop back down and start over again. I know, I’ve done this. Good luck, you can always take a break and come back later.:)

Literally took me a year to figure that out - and then going back and watching Lynn's video's he actually says the same thing. Don't know how I missed it, but had I not - it would have saved me a lot of time and a lot of chipped edges.
