Trial: Image uploading enabled

Up until now, we have always run our site with image uploading disabled. I.e. you had to use an external site like imgur. We did this initially because then we didn't need to worry about diskspace, or what this site was going to cost us when we didn't even know if it was going to be around.

Now that we've been around for a while, we have decided to open up image uploading on a trial basis. We're going to enable it for a couple of weeks, and see what the impact will be on our disk space use. Ideally, we're going to allow it without restriction. we know this feature was requested by many.

We want to be clear that this is still a trial. Glen and I are paying for this site and the license out of pocket, because we'd rather not have banners. Not that banners would bring us much money, given our low overall traffic. This also means that should we need to upgrade to a bigger hosting plan because of diskspace, we will need to figure out if that is what want, and how we will pay for it.

But those are worries for later. Currently, there is a minimum requirement in order to be able to upload pics. It is simple: you have to have an active user account, have made 10 posts, have received 2 likes, and been a member for more than 2 days.

The likes are basically only a limit to prevent spammers from filling our disk with images. We assume that noone would actually 'like' spam.

So, give it a try, see if it works for you, and let us know how it goes.

On a more practical note: when you upload images, please use jpg or png files, and not bitmaps or other large file types.

I agree with Jamie, limiting size will surly save you a lot of disk space.
Some folks don't know how, or won't resize images. hence you get your space filled with much fewer images.

On a system running Windows, open Paint -> choose your image-> at the top there's tools hit that-> then I believe there is the option to resize there-> resize te image then save as

I think that's it. Not run windows for a few years

In reducing a photos size, you will rarely compromise the quality.
It's when you increase their size, they have a tendency to get "pixilated"

Good points. I have set the maximum image size to 640 x 640.
I think that's not unreasonable and looks quite big on my screen.
And if you want to link high res pics, you can still do that via the imgur site or another external photo host.

Well I'll have to get a few more posts in, to see how it goes for me on my android.
Had no problems posting my avatar, but no pics allowed in threads yet, unless I do URL. HA!

@Outback I manually did the promotion for you. It should work now. the automatic process is just to keep spammers from immediately getting upload right.
You're set.

Personally I was good either way. But since the iphone came up Mia I've been struggling to post photos from this android. But I'll give it a shot. Whichever way us easier is what I'll use. But if it's a post with multiple pics I'll go the image route, so not to hog space
